For better or for worse, I was stuck in New York City for New Year’s Eve 2000.

I didn’t have any special desire to stand in Times Square and watch the ball drop with millions of other people (New York is legendary for New Year’s Eve cold snaps).

Having a Ball

On the other hand, as long as I was here, and working only a few blocks away, I figured I might as well grab a few pictures.

This is that famous ball, the one that drops at midnight to mark the New Year.

They had redone it with all kinds of fancy crystal and halogen lights for the special celebration.

The scene from a few blocks north of Times Square, looking south. I worked all night the 30th, so I came out early in the morning, before there was much of a crowd in Times Square, to have a look-see. More . . .
