Notes

From GSBC notes on William (see Sources below for link):

William Samuel Veldran was born on 2 February 1828. He was born on 26 February 1828 at New York, NY. He married Margaretta Gaston Duyckinck, daughter of Richard Bancker Duyckinck and Hannah Holden, on 23 October 1850. William Samuel Veldran died on 5 February 1903 at Oradell, Bergen County, NJ, at age 74. He was buried at Woodside Cemetery, Dumont, NJ.

Name variation: William Vildren.

William sold his mill property for $50,000 in 1874 and retired. He and the family moved to Rutherford. Jim and Will got jobs in NYC working for the Knickerbocker Ice Co.

The mill had been sold to Albert Z Ackerman but he didn't pay the mortgage so they foreclosed. Mr. Ackerman wouldn't leave so Grandpa Veldran watched from the station until Mr. Ackerman went to lunch then he went up, locked the doors and retook possession of the mill. Mr. Ackerman sued to obtain possession of the turbine wheel that he had installed. Mr. William N Johnson (later senator) was Grandpa Veldran's lawyer and he won the case. William and Margaretta sold their property to son, William H for the sum of $20,000 on 25 Oct 1877. He lived at Hoboken, NJ. After the cash bequests the remainder of William's estate was divided equally between the seven living children.

See Genealogical Society of Bergen County (New Jersey) page with data on William Veldran. This page does not suggest source information, but GSBC seems to have many of the notes and files of Mary Veldran DeWitt, a granddaughter of William Veldran and a genealogist. We might guess that her notes are where their notes came from.
